“南天一柱”据说是清代宣统年间崖州知州范云梯所书。"南天一柱"来历还有传说。相传很久以前，陵水黎族有两位仙女知道后偷偷下凡，立身于南海中，为当地渔家指航打渔。王母娘娘恼怒，派雷公雷母抓她们回去二人不肯，化为双峰石，被劈为两截，一截掉在黎安附近的海中，一截飞到天涯之旁，成为今天的"南天一柱"。

远古先民的“地方天圆”，认为大地是方形的，故有东南西北的说法，天是圆的，天笼盖着“四方大地”，大地东南西北分别有四跟柱子支撑着天空，如此的南天一拄迎合了人们的地方天圆之说。人们见此“南天一拄”大可不必担心天要塌崩下来。

1986版的两圆人民币的背面图案采用的就就是这“南天一柱”的风景图。

这里碧水蓝天一色，烟波浩翰，帆影点点，椰林婆娑，奇石林立，那刻有："天涯"、"海角"、"南天一柱"、"海南南天"等巨石雄峙海滨，使整个景区如诗如画，美有胜收，据记载，"天涯"题刻，是清代雍正年间崖州知府程哲所书。

又有说古时候交通闭塞，"鸟飞尚需半年程"的琼岛，人烟稀少，荒芜凄凉，是封建王朝流放"逆臣"之地。来到这里的人，来去无路，望海兴叹，故谓之"天涯海角"。宋朝名臣胡铨哀叹"区区万里天涯路，野草若烟正断魂"。唐代宰相要德裕用"一去一万里，千之千不还"的诗句倾吐了谪的际遇。
