1、读这本书首先是扩充知识面。本书享誉世界几十年，据说与《梦的解析》、《广义相对论的基础》、《就业、利息和货币通论》等并列为20世纪影响世界的十本书之一。就第一、二的部分看，虽然还没讲到中世纪、宗教、十字军东征等，光伯罗奔尼撒战争、迦太基、孔雀王朝、特里克文明等等对于大多数国人来说模模糊糊的故事，足够帮我们把数千年前发生在地球各个角落的大事、牛人串起来了。但是串同时发现脑子“知识越多越混乱”，最后干脆花了一整天时间将公元5世纪之前的全球主要文明的历史做了下图，不枉白读此书（一部分）。

2、除了知识的积累，最重要的是更换看世界的、看问题的视角。有句话讲，读过的信息只有结合你的思考才真正成为你自己的知识。举个例子，中国史讲王朝兴替，总要归结到上一个王朝腐朽没落，帝王昏庸荒淫，新的王朝缔造者顺应民心，雄才大略，克难奋进，终于救人民于水火，扶大厦之将倾，谈笑间成就雄图霸业。真如此吗？至少斯塔夫里阿诺斯不完全这么看。

不少时候王朝的更替并不是旧的王朝太腐朽或者新的王朝更文明、更进步。比如历代中国对抗北边游牧民族的冲击，这不单纯是某个些君主的问题或者是所谓王朝中后期皇帝的能力不足问题，这就是农耕文明与游牧文明的数千年冲突，当农耕文明统治较好，战备较强，游牧民族就难冲进来，而一旦稍有不慎，则游牧民族就有机可乘；又或者是技术的进步加强了游牧民族的攻击能力，比如驯马技术提高，甚至可能只是马镫的发明方便了骑手解放双手，极大的增强了战斗力。又或者，比如周代商，是因为冶铁技术的进步，边缘的游牧民族获得了更多的攻击能力而已。所以一个近些年已经开始被广大“愚民”重新清楚的是，中国古代那么多亡国之君真的都是那么荒淫无道吗？至少隋炀、崇祯包括光绪（慈禧）都不是完全如此。（也让我们想起诺基亚说的，我们什么也没干，我们投入的科研经费是苹果的数倍，但我们输了；或者是那句“时代抛弃你的时候连声再见都不会说”。）

3、与大多数中国历史书以政治经济为主线、文化为辅线（或许）、科学技术偶尔出场演个路人甲不同，这本书花了很多篇幅去讲技术对于世界推动的重要性，包括在文明的更替（采集——狩猎——游牧——农耕——工业）中，技术的重要性甚至可能是决定性的。这不仅有助于我们理解历史，甚至有助于我们理解现实，比如为什么米国不断出现从造轮船、造飞机到现在造spacex、造alphago这样的技术应用追求狂人；比如《权力的游戏》中的瓦雷利亚钢怎么或隐或现占据那么多戏份。
